First challenge at O’Matic: Motiontober!

computer monitor

In October 2023, when O’Matic was created, I set myself the challenge of participating in Motiontober, which is a motion design challenge.

First of all, what is Motiontober?

Motiontober is a challenge for animators and motion designers created by the Qimono agency. The principle is simple: a list is provided and, similar to Inktober (another challenge during the month of October, but this time for illustration), participants must post their creation of the day on social media.

You can also discover all the creations made by the community on their Instagram!

What were the constraints?

The constraints were simple: animate one word per day according to the list that had been sent out at the end of July.

I also set myself another constraint: to stick to the Halloween theme (not very original for the month of October).

How did the organisation go?

It was quite tedious, to be honest, but that’s why it’s a challenge!

Unfortunately, I got started a little late… I first wanted to gather most of my ideas and put them into a storyboard, which took me a while during September. I didn’t start the animation until 24 September, to be precise… So I was working under pressure very quickly!

Despite everything, I was able to enjoy myself every day hosting the show!

And the result?

31 animations that you can discover in this video!

During October, I was able to take the time (not enough for my liking, as we had to work for our clients!) to improve in several areas:

  • The character rig: hence the presence of our friend the skeleton, to understand how the bones were articulated using the Duik script. To do this, I put myself in its place and tried to perform the same movements (which earned me some teasing from Thomas).
  • Consistency and perseverance: it’s difficult to stay creative seven days a week, and some subjects were more complicated to depict, but I had Thomas’s support, who helped me find or refine certain ideas and iron out some details.
  • Impostor syndrome: sadly, this is one of the flaws of all creative people: being satisfied with what we produce!

Are you satisfied with these motions?

Of course, like any self-respecting designer, I have my favourites. But you won’t find out which ones they are, so that I don’t influence your opinion!

I am especially pleased to have completed the challenge on time, meeting all the requirements: the words, the deadlines…!

Does O’Matic also offer motion design?

Of course!

This is one of the services we are increasingly seeking to promote! As you may have seen in some of our projects such as Slim Sonic, SNØ and Mirabaud, we seek to incorporate motion or animated illustrations whenever possible! These allow us to adapt to a brand’s guidelines (or create them from scratch) very easily!
